FAQ

COVID-19 Update
Q: How can I sanitize my canvas set to help mitigate the transmission of COVID-19 and other viruses?

A: According to the CDC, household (3 percent) hydrogen peroxide is effective in deactivating rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within 6 to 8 minutes of exposure. Rhinovirus is more difficult to destroy than coronaviruses, so hydrogen peroxide should be able to break down the coronavirus in less time. Pour it undiluted into a spray bottle and spray it on the surface of the canvas, but let it sit on the surface for at least 1 minute. Then you can wipe the excess and residual fluid from the canvas. We have tested this method for color-fastness and hydrogen peroxide did not affect the color of the canvas in our tests (exposure time was around 7 minutes). We also tested both a diluted bleach solution and rubbing alcohol on our canvas sets, but both of these methods ruined the canvas color almost immediately. DO NOT use rubbing alcohol or bleach to clean your cotton canvas sets!

While hydrogen peroxide is the ONLY option for traditional canvas sets, if you have one of our leather cover sets or Textilene cover sets more sanitizing options are available to you. For leather: hydrogen peroxide or a diluted bleach solution is safe to use on our leather sets utilizing the application technique above. DO NOT use alcohol, as it will change the sheen and color of the leather. For Textilene: hydrogen peroxide, a diluted bleach solution, and rubbing alcohol all produced good results in our tests with no impact on the color-fastness of the Textilene. Utilizing the application technique above, you should be safe to use any of these disinfectants on Textilene.

Please note that we do not guarantee these results; The Chair Store will not be held liable if you ruin the color of your canvas, and we make no guarantee that the above method will prevent the spread of any illness. Proceed with these sanitizing guidelines at your own risk.

Q: What is an embroidery-ready canvas?

A: These are canvases we sell that have a removable outside back. We offer these to accommodate our customers who prefer to do their own embroidery. Upon receipt of the canvas, the customer simply has to remove the outside piece (it attaches with hook and loop fasteners), stitch their embroidery, and then reattach the back piece to hide the stitching and remaining stabilizer on the back of their embroidery.

Q: What’s the difference between a round-stick and a flat-stick canvas?

A: The principal difference is the method by which the canvas is secured to the chair. Flat-stick canvases are an older design; the canvas seat will wrap over and around the seat rail and rest in a notch on the outside of the chair frame. We are the only source left for this type of canvas. Round stick canvases attach to the chair via a groove in the middle of the seat rail. This is the modern design that most companies use; if your chair is less than 30 years old, round-stick canvas is probably what you need.

Q: My canvas set has become dirty or soiled over time. How can I clean it?

A: We do not recommend machine laundering or dry cleaning the canvas fabric as these processes may harm the water repellency.  You can surface wash the fabric with cold or warm water. A brush may be used for stubborn stains. Do not use hot water, as the canvas may shrink. Furthermore, we do not advocate the use of any chemicals, compounds, or solutions (other than water) for cleaning the canvas. If a small amount of soap MUST be used, be aware that it can affect the water repellency as well; please exercise caution. After washing, you may hang the canvas to drip dry, or you may install the wet canvas back onto the chair frame to help it maintain its shape. Do not dry it in a machine dryer, as the canvas will shrink. As a preventive measure to guard against future soiling, you may use something like Scotch Guard to protect the canvas. Regular reapplication may be necessary as the coating wears off.

Q: “My chair didn’t come with canvas installation instructions”, “I lost my instructions”, “I can’t figure out how to install my canvas”, etc. What do I do?

A: We’ve got you covered. Our chairs will arrive completely assembled, with the exception of the canvas set. This helps to protect the canvas against shipping damage. If you need a copy of how to install the canvas set on your new chair, click here or just watch the video below. If you require further assistance please call our customer service department at 800.883.1423.

Q: My canvas needs to be replaced, but my chair is so old and worn that I’m unsure of the manufacturer. Will your canvas sets fit my chair?

A: Possibly. We can guarantee that if you own a Gold Medal brand chair of any kind, we have canvas sets that will fit and give that heirloom a new lease on life. With the vast number of companies out there making director’s chairs, however, we cannot guarantee that our canvases will fit on other brands of chairs. Please contact our customer service department at 800.883.1423. They can help you take relevant measurements of your canvas or chair and let you know if we have a replacement canvas set that will meet your needs.

Q: What’s the weight limit for your chairs?

A: For our adult-sized director’s chairs, we advertise a safe weight threshold of 350 pounds. This also applies to the Gold Medal Camp Stool. For our Child’s Chair, the working weight limit is 100 pounds. These guidelines refer to the weight of a seated person on the canvas seat. Standing on the canvas seat, standing on the arms, or standing on the seat rails will change the amount of force your weight exerts upon that point of the chair, as your weight will be concentrated on a smaller surface area. This could cause failure at a lower weight threshold. Please be careful; misuse of your chair could result in serious injury and could void your warranty.

Q: I’m interested in placing large, recurring orders for chairs. Is there wholesale pricing available?

A: Absolutely. We have several customers that we work with in this regard. If you would like more information about the process of setting up a wholesale account, please contact our customer service department at 800.883.1423.
